Developing vocabulary at St Michael's

At St Michael's we value the importance of developing the vocabulary of our children.  We understand that having good vocabulary is crucial for success in all areas of the curriculum and this is why we place such emphasis on the development of vocabulary.

Where children have limited understanding of vocabulary we have found that they have been weaker readers and have limited success in reading comprehension activities.  We would ask you as parents to support your children at home by talking to your children and labelling everyday objects approprriately.  For example explaining to children the difference between a cupboard, waldrobe and cabinet.  If we are concerned about a child's vocabulary development we may send home a pack of picture cards for you to work through at home to help to extend their vocabulary.
